5 Tips to make a more usable website
While optimising content for search engines, SEO experts must do the same for regular users as well. After all, it's not enough that a web site is ranked high, if its content makes no sense to people who eventually reach there. Hence, a website must achieve higher usability during the optimisation process and here are some tips to do so:
#1: Keywords! Keywords! Keywords! The relevancy
of keywords can help a visitor find what he or she is looking for
in your page. The content must not be garbled by keyword stuffing,
but must rather provide logical and informative knowledge to the
visitor. It is essential that, at all times, on all pages, your
website is written for visitors and not for the search engine spiders.
#2: Maximum page size While many
internet users have switched to broadband, there still exist some
that are on 56k modems. Even a 200kB website will take sufficiently
long to load at these speeds. It is prudent therefore, to keep these
users in mind. By reducing the web page size, you ensure that the
frustrating wait for a page load is shorter. Reduced or thumbnail
images with links to their full size locations can also help this
process. A CSS layout discussed in the next section is also helpful.
A user friendly download time is the key to an inclusive web page.
#3: CSS and web design Cascading
Style Sheets are a popular layout tool, but many SEOs overlook the
potential they have for optimisation. CSS basically adds a template
to your web page, allowing dynamic style changes and cleaner code
by specifying a single style file on the server. This means that
the page will not be cluttered with design or layout code, making
it smaller to load and easier for search engine spiders to read.
#4: Meaningful titles and headings
One commonly
overlooked aspect is a user intuitive design for a web page. Making
content appear as relevant as it is, is important to the Search
Engine Optimisation. The title of a page must make sense to
a user, i.e. if cluttered with keywords it can often be a turn-off.
Also heading tags used to demarcate actual content divisions and
sections in a web page, will help visitors understand if the site
is relevant to them or not.
#5: Providing quality content, always
In addition to other aspects of SEO, search engines also check for external links to your page. With this in mind, only a content relevant page will be linked by other websites. It is paramount that your articles have pertinent information rather than noisy keyword content. Follow social trends and styles, always keeping your target audience (their likes and possible dislikes) in mind. There is no trade off for a good quality well laid-out web page.
